Weirdly Shaped and Well Photographed

… a blog about clothing for curves, bras for giant boobs (and tiny backs!), and escaping the scourge of the dreaded BoobLoaf and ButtChest.

Quick note for new readers (or, you know, all of you):

I feel extremely lucky and grateful to have a blog that’s only a day old and to already have been linked to by some of my favorite bloggers!  So I just wanted to say a very large hello there and welcome to those of you who are popping by, and to let you know that while of course I’ve only just started with these two posts, I am committed to regularly updating this blog with the best stuff I can find (and the worst, so you don’t have to make the same mistakes I do).

I plan on updating at least once a week, and putting little things out on Tumblr more often than that.  In the meantime, though, I would love to hear any requests for content, style, etc. and will keep those in mind when choosing what to post about in the near future.  Clothing?  Lingerie?  Specialty brands, or bust-friendly finds from regular stores?

Also, for any inclined to give a bit of immediate feedback: right now, I am altering most of my bras, as 28K is very hard to find and I have a few other fit issues that rear their ugly heads regularly as well.  I am waiting on some custom Ewa Michalak and Braologie items, but in the meantime, is it helpful for me to post bra reviews when I have had to alter the bras somewhat?  I feel that I can still give a good idea of overall style, shape, band tightness, and cup volume even having had to alter them in some ways, but please let me know if you do not feel this would be useful.  I would definitely show the alterations for each one clearly in the photos, and for any that aren’t done yet, would show before and after shots.  Oh, and I intend to do separate posts about alterations that can be done to make lingerie items more comfortable, and already have an interview planned for sometime soon with an incredibly smart, capable, and lovely woman and fellow blogger that I think you will all adore.

Again, welcome to the page.  I am happy to have you here, and hope that I can be as helpful as possible to you!  Please consider this to be a body-snark-free safe space, too; all questions, comments, rants, etc. are welcome regardless of age, size, sexuality, etc.  In other words, HATERS GO AWAY.  Everyone else, make yourself comfortable.

In the meantime, here is a ridiculous picture of me dressed as Elvira.   Just for funsies.

Urkye Doesn’t Irk Me, Part 1: The Kieska Dress

Okay… First real post… *lets out breath* I know, it’s weird to be nervous about writing a blog post. I’ve just been planning this for so long, and I really, really want it to be good. So here goes. Let me know if/how I can make this better.

To get started with a bang, I’m going to go with a dress from a company every busty and hourglass-shaped lady should know: Urkye. For those of you who are unaware, Poland is mysteriously full of small clothing and lingerie companies that specialize in made-for-curves styles. When I picture Poland now, I just kind of see a bunch of really stylish women with giant boobs wandering around and selling things to one another. Seriously. And there, just at the corner of Nipped-In Waist Street and Giant Boobs Boulevard, is a shop called Urkye. Look in the window and you’ll see bold-colored items that look like basic staples of any standard clothing store. Put one on, though, and prepare to be amazed: they fit! Darts in all the right places! Stretch without sheerness! Seams that don’t hit at nipple level! Pardon the silliness, but I have to admit, the first time I pulled on a shirt with a below-bust seam that actually worked for me, I laughed out loud with glee. But enough. Let’s talk Kieska.

Urkye is one of several clothing companies in Europe that has dual sizing: a number for your overall body size followed by a number for your boobs. Urkye carries 34 through 42, which corresponds to about waist sizes of 25.2″ – 31.5″, and follows it with o, oo, or ooo to indicate the amount of room in the bust. Stretchy items have combined bust measurements (o/oo and oo/ooo), as they’re more forgiving. A while ago, I decided I wanted to try out a few items, but I had been debating about which size to order, as my measurements at the time put me right on the cusp of two sizes on their sizing chart. Luckily, this Kieska Dress in turquoise came up on a clothing swap I frequent in 36oo/ooo, the smaller of the two sizes I was considering. I snapped it up like an -elegant metaphor here-, and I’m so glad I did, because it fits perfectly.

This seems like a fairly simple dress, but between the amazing fit and a few quirky touches, it’s really something special. The material is thick enough to be completely opaque and not too clingy on trouble spots, but not so much as to be too warm for spring and summer. It stretches gently over curves, and the bust-friendly construction ensures that it’s not strained on top. While hardly skin-tight, it skims the waist closely enough to show off the hourglass figure perfectly.

As you get down to the hips, you find the first extra feature: roomy pockets with slightly scrunched tops. I was initially worried that they would add too much bulk and disrupt the delicate but coveted hourglass bust/waist/hips ratio, but it turns out that all they are is adorable. Well, adorable and useful! It makes me wish I were a painter, so I could stick some brushes in them or something. Alas, cello bows are too long. If nothing else, it gives me a place to put my hands.*

*random sidenote: if there is a picture of me in a group that was taken without my knowing, I am gesticulating in it. Without fail. I’m pretty sure I’m half muppet or something.

The other detail that Urkye has added, and this is one that I find to be absolutely lovely, is slightly poofed sleeves. I find that this feature adds just the right touch of femininity, eliminating any chance of the pockets making the dress seem juvenile. I may or may not have reversed that process by making the face above, but on you, dear reader, I’m sure it would look downright refined.

As you can see, the figure-hugging qualities of the dress are maintained from all angles, as is the flattering lack of cling. The dress is comfortable, too, and extremely easy to accessorize if you’re into that sort of thing. I have paired it successfully with all manner of colorful leggings and shoes, as well as an eccentric hat or two. You could easily wear a belt in a contrasting color, although I suspect that you might share my feeling that any day in which I can get away with wearing a dress WITHOUT a belt (and still have some semblance of a waistline) is a good day.

All in all, I would highly recommend both this brand and this dress, which also comes in black, wine, purple, navy, orange, red, and brown. I’ve gotten loads of compliments every time I’ve worn it.

Okay, here’s the part of the blog I want your help with. I’d like to make a comprehensive information, rating, and comparison system to give you all the best possible chance at figuring out what would fit you best and what styles you would love, complete with cross-referencing. Here is my first attempt at putting that information together (all links in this section will be to tags within the blog):

An introduction, of sorts.

Hi there, and welcome to Weirdly Shaped and Well-Photographed. I’d like to give you a little rundown of who I am and why I am starting yet another Busty Blog.

Who: I’m a performer and teacher of music, first and foremost. I try not to define people by their work, but in my case it’s part and parcel of who I am, and damn fun to boot. It’s also the most stressful work I can imagine. And I’m broke a lot. But it’s worth it, and I’m grateful to be making my living doing what I love and what I went to school for. In my off time, I love to cook and have all manner of kitchen gadgets and mechanisms to facilitate it, I love to be silly (I’m often a Dance Party of One), I’m borderline obsessed with finding bras that fit me (not very successful so far), and I am crazy into the Just Dance game series, which I use as exercise (I don’t do “real” exercise – for example, I consider running to be suitable for only a few purposes: escaping enemies, getting to the loo, and stopping bacon from burning). As is probably obvious by now, I am a great lover and possibly over-user of parentheses. I have an adorable little dog named Milo who occasionally shows up in my pictures. And I am happy to meet you.

What: Primarily, this blog will be for clothing and lingerie reviews. The aim is to provide a basis for comparison and sizing for other ladies who are similarly proportioned – very hourglass shaped, and specifically with small bands and large cup sizes. This is not to say that readers of other shapes aren’t welcome! I love everyone! Seriously, I’m friendly and enthusiastic almost to a fault, and the more people this blog can help/entertain/whatever the better. It will just probably be most helpful to people who are shaped like me. To make it easier for everyone to size relatively, I will be including current measurements on every post as well as listing what bra I am wearing under clothing posts so you can tell what shaping is from the bra and what is the dress itself. Please let me know if there are additional details that would be helpful! Eventually I intend to implement a cross-referencing system, both within and across brands.

A quick note on the name: I don’t mean “weirdly shaped” as an insult; all I mean is that my proportions are outside the norm (especially if you look at mass-produced clothing and lingerie). I am quite happily weird in any of a number of ways, body shape being just one among them. The “well-photographed part” comes from the lucky circumstance that being in the arts has acquainted me with some really talented photographers, several of whom have offered to lend their talents to this blog. I want the pictures to be interesting and nice to look at, in addition to the first priority of being informative. Most posts will feature the following layout: a few non-specific photos in whatever I am writing about, followed by pictures and text on all the different angles, features, and drawbacks of each item.

Where: I intend to take photos wherever suits the clothing best! I will probably make some bad calls on this (just wait till you see the post featuring the Great Tree Incident of 2013), but hopefully they will all be engaging, at the very least.

When: Well, starting now, I suppose. Heh.

Why: This is a big one for me. I spent many years not knowing how to dress in a flattering way, and early on went so far as to purposefully disguise my figure because I was teased all the time. For years, I wore the wrong size bra (thank you Victoria’s Secret) and stuffed myself into things just hoping they would mostly handle my boobs. A trip to Bravissimo in London totally changed what I was wearing, and I was set… Until I grew out of those bras. And then out of the next set. And the next. And now? Well, now I am sized out of nearly everything. My bra size is approximately 28K (of course this varies by brand and model of bra), and for the most part, bras that come in 28 backs tend to stop at J. I am currently in the middle of learning how to alter sister-sized bras with all the fit problems they produce and trying custom-made bras from several companies. I am also, after recently losing quite a bit of weight, figuring out how to accentuate the small waist of my hourglass figure without smoothing my boobs into a Boobloaf or ButtChest (see future post). Along the way, reading the blogs of other lovely busty women and reading and participating on Bratabase and various large-bust forums have really helped me, and I want to give back to that community.  I am hoping that somewhere out there, there is a woman shaped like me who needs as much help as I have needed, and that this blog will be a resource for her.

How: with a little help from my friends. Seriously, I know some extremely talented folks. Expect to see credits for the photographers, hair and makeup artists, and maybe even stylists along the way. I’m nothing without them.

So without further to-do, welcome to Weirdly Shaped and Well Photographed. I’m glad you’re here, and any comments or suggestions on how to make this blog as useful as possible are highly encouraged. In the meantime, here is a picture, because we all know that blog posts need pictures. :)

“Urban Ennui,” photo by David Eckert, taken as a candid shot before my first photo shoot for the blog.  Do any of you recognize the bra in this picture?  It’s a personal favorite, despite giving a totally different shape from my usual taste, and will definitely be getting a review of its own soon.
